Bright, Polished, and the Standout Bottle of the Set
This was my favorite bottle from the Predator sample set. What I liked most was the balance. It had bright fruit and refreshing lift, but also enough softness and lightly toasted character to feel complete.
I tend to enjoy Chardonnay when it has some richness, but I do not want it to feel heavy or overly buttery. This bottle landed in a really nice middle ground for me. It had a coastal, fresh feel while still giving me the Chardonnay details I enjoy, like soft texture, orchard fruit, and a little bakery-like warmth.
Holly really loved this wine as well, which matters to me because the best bottles in our house are usually the ones we both want to keep drinking.
Lemon Zest, Orchard Fruit, and a Light Toasted Finish
The nose opened with lemon zest and clean citrus lift. I also picked up honeysuckle and soft white-floral notes, which gave the wine a fresh, pretty aromatic quality right away.
As the wine warmed up a bit, more Chardonnay character came through. I noticed graham cracker and a touch of crushed almond, which added depth without taking over the fruit.
On the palate, the acidity was juicy and refreshing. The main fruit notes were golden apple and crisp green pear, with a soft, supple texture that made the wine feel smooth instead of sharp.
The Finish Made This Wine Memorable
The finish was one of the best parts of the wine for me. There was a light kiss of sweetness and toast that reminded me a little of toasted marshmallow, but it did not turn heavy or sugary.
That toasted note faded cleanly, which kept the wine refreshing and made me want another sip. This is where the balance really worked: bright fruit, fresh acidity, soft texture, and restrained toast all showing up without any one piece overpowering the rest.
To me, that is what made it drink like a good coastal-leaning Chardonnay. It was bright and breezy, but still had enough richness to feel like a complete wine.
The “Ladybird” Vineyard Story
The “Ladybird” name ties into the producer’s sustainability-minded vineyard story. The winery highlights the use of ladybugs as natural predators in the vineyard to help control pests and reduce reliance on synthetic inputs.
The fruit is listed as coming from California’s North Coast, a region influenced by Pacific breezes and fog. In this bottle, that freshness showed up in the bright citrus lift, juicy acidity, and clean finish.
What I Would Pair With Predator “Ladybird” Chardonnay
This is a very food-friendly Chardonnay because it has freshness, fruit, texture, and just enough toast. I would pair it with foods that can work with both the acidity and the lightly creamy finish.
Fresh Fish
Grilled fish, pan-seared white fish, salmon, scallops, or simply prepared seafood.
Grilled Vegetables
Grilled zucchini, asparagus, corn, squash, mushrooms, or other seasonal vegetables.
Harvest Salads
Salads with apples, pears, nuts, roasted squash, chicken, or a punchy cheese like gorgonzola.
Creamy Dishes
Light cream sauces, chicken with herbs, creamy pasta, or buttery seafood dishes.
95 Points
I rated Predator “Ladybird” Chardonnay 2024 at 95 points because it was bright, balanced, refreshing, and still layered enough to be memorable. It had lemon zest, orchard fruit, honeysuckle, soft texture, restrained toast, and a clean finish that made it my favorite bottle from the sample set.
Holly really loved it as well, which made this one of the easiest wines from the set for me to recommend.
Real Wine Reviews From Bottles I Actually Taste
