Pinot Noir Review

2024 Arroyo Seco Pinot Noir Review

This 2024 Arroyo Seco Pinot Noir is a lighter, more delicate style of Pinot Noir with bright red fruit, earthy undertones, and enough savory character to make it especially good with food. I tasted it with smoked salmon I made for the family, and that pairing was one of the best parts of the experience.

Quick Review

2024 Arroyo Seco Pinot Noir at a Glance

My Rating

93 Points

Best For

Pinot Noir drinkers who prefer lighter, savory, food-friendly wines over big, jammy reds.

Main Notes

Cherry, ripe raspberry, sage, earth, smooth texture, and a lingering savory finish.

Best Pairing Tested

Smoked salmon. That pairing worked really well for our family meal.

My Tasting Experience

A Lighter Pinot Noir That Still Has Real Character

This is the kind of Pinot Noir I enjoy when I want something lighter and more nuanced instead of a big, fruit-heavy red. It leans delicate, but it does not feel thin or boring. There is enough savory character underneath the red fruit to keep the wine interesting.

What stood out to me most was how well it worked at the table. I paired it with smoked salmon I made for the family, and the wine’s acidity, red fruit, and earthy-herbal notes all fit the meal really well.

This is not the Pinot Noir I would choose if I wanted something rich, dark, and jammy. But for a graceful, food-friendly Pinot with some complexity, it did a very nice job.

In the Glass

Cherry, Raspberry, Sage, and Earth

On the nose, I picked up bright red fruit, especially cherry and ripe raspberry. There was also an herbal accent that reminded me of sage, along with a gentle earthiness that added depth.

On the palate, the wine stayed true to that lifted, lighter profile. It was medium-bodied, finely textured, and driven by balanced acidity that kept the fruit feeling fresh instead of sweet.

The finish was smooth and lingering, with the earthy and herbal notes showing up again after the red fruit faded. That savory finish is part of what made the wine work so well with food.

Structure & Style

Built More for Freshness Than Power

This is 100% Pinot Noir, aged 10 months in French and American oak, and bottled at 13.5% ABV. Those details match the restrained, elegant style I tasted in the glass.

The wine’s listed pH of 3.68 and TA of 0.58 g/100mL also fit the way it drank. It had enough acidity to stay fresh and food-friendly without coming across as sharp or sour.

The suggested aging window is 5 to 7 years. Based on the savory character already showing, I could see this developing more earthy nuance with some time, although I also enjoyed it now.

Site Context

Arroyo Seco Pinot Noir Character

Arroyo Seco, which translates to “Dry Creek,” is a sub-appellation of the Monterey AVA. The area is known for cooler growing conditions and a long growing season, which can help Pinot Noir keep its acidity while still developing flavor.

The producer notes describe estate vineyards inland from Big Sur with deep, gravelly soils. I would not pretend to taste soil directly, but the finished wine did have the kind of freshness, savory detail, and red-fruited restraint that made sense with that cooler-site description.

Food Pairing

What I Would Pair With This Arroyo Seco Pinot Noir

This Pinot Noir is exactly the kind of red I want with lighter, savory dishes. Since I actually paired it with smoked salmon and really liked the match, that would be my first recommendation.

Smoked Salmon

This was the pairing I tested at home, and it worked very well with the wine’s acidity and savory finish.

Roast Chicken

Roast chicken with herbs, root vegetables, or mushrooms would be a very natural pairing.

Mushroom Dishes

Mushroom risotto, mushroom pasta, or roasted mushrooms would work well with the earthy notes.

Lighter Savory Meals

Duck, pork tenderloin, salmon, lentils, or herb-forward vegetable dishes would all make sense.

Final Rating

93 Points

I rated this 2024 Arroyo Seco Pinot Noir at 93 points because it was graceful, balanced, and food-friendly, with cherry, raspberry, sage, earth, smooth texture, and a lingering savory finish. It paired especially well with the smoked salmon I made for the family.

Real Wine Reviews From Bottles I Actually Taste

My wine reviews are based on actually tasting the bottle, not just repeating producer notes. I focus on what I noticed in the glass, who I think the wine is best for, whether I would drink it again, and what food I would pair with it.

For this Arroyo Seco Pinot Noir, the biggest takeaways were the delicate red fruit, sage-like herbal note, earthy finish, balanced acidity, and how well it paired with smoked salmon at home.
