Pairing Wine With Barramundi

with No Comments

Barramundi is one of the most underrated white fish out there. Being an incredibly sustainable fish, it’s not only good on the palate but good on the soul. It can be prepared in almost any type of cooking style and is very popular throughout numerous cultures & their cuisine as well. That is a quality that wine lovers such as ourselves will always be happy to hear, as it means that the variety list of wine can be just as long!

Best Red Wine To Drink With Barramundi

Most preparations of Barramundi are flavorful, as to highlight the unique buttery texture & flavor profile that the fish gives the palate. This is why we generally recommend avoiding big & powerful wines, and sticking to light and fruity ones. For red wines, this would include some that are more youthful and fruit-centered.

Pinot Noir

The amount of ways you can prepare Barramundi can seem endless. Because of this, we generally recommend the safest option when pairing with red wine: pinot noir. Its classic fruit-first palate and its refreshing acidity make it the perfect companion that would be hard to get wrong when pairing with such a versatile fish.

Beaujolais

The original “goes with everything” wine itself. Beaujolais is incredible because it can be drunk alone as something to refresh yourself, or it can be paired with almost any dish to give your mouth the much needed break it can sometimes need when enjoying a flavorful meal. DOnt ever downplay the importance of Beaujolais and what it can do, especially when it comes to Barramundi.

Zinfandel

The Zinfandel is one of the most well-known New World varieties that cannot be overlooked when pairing with sophisticated dishes. Most marketing and word-of-mouth you get on Zinfandel is almost gimmicky and centered towards its more sweet versions, but a good Old-Wine Zin can go toe-to-toe with nearly any red in terms of its flavor profile. Use it when you feel like you want to add a little more pizazz to your barramundi dish.

Best White Wine To Drink With Barramundi

Barramundi & all its different preparation styles can find nearly any white wine partner to do the dance with. We recommend really considering how you are preparing the fish and what ingredients you are using, as you can specifically match to white wine based off of those simple observations.

German Riesling

If your preparation of a barramundi fish entails some sort of lemon or zest, a German Riesling is what we recommend. German Riesling has long been one of the wines on almost every wine lovers “must have” list, and that is in part to how much you get out of its sharp acidity and full body. It’s really important you stick to this classic way of the Riesling variety, and don’t confuse it with its sweeter counterpart that has become more popular in the New World.

Oaked or Unoaked Chardonnay

Chardonnay can be the perfect partner for your barramundi dish, and that can be the case for any “version” of chardonnay, too! If your dish is a bit more buttery, the acidic texture of an Unoaked, Burgundy style Chardonnay would be the perfect complement. If your dish is more in the mediterranean and/or style that would need some bringing down, an Oaked Chardonnay with its rich texture could be perfect for the meal.

Best Wine To Drink With Barramundi

Barramundi may not get the same love as other white fish, which can almost seem crazy, given how much it is adored and deliciously prepared. It is a wine fanatics dream to have such a dish, because it gives them such a wide range of options when pairing.
