About Eberle Winery
Eberle Winery was founded by Gary Eberle in 1979 with Cabernet Sauvignon as the flagship wine. Today, it is one of the classic Paso Robles wineries and a place that feels like it belongs on a first-time Paso itinerary.
The most unique part of Eberle is the cave system, which was introduced in 1996. The caves are a major reason to visit because they add something memorable beyond a standard tasting room experience.
Another thing that makes Eberle different is that tastings and cave tours have traditionally been complimentary. Gary Eberle feels strongly that those experiences should be free, which is very different from many wineries where tastings and tours can get expensive quickly.
The Eberle Caves Are a Must-Do
If you are planning to visit Eberle, I would definitely plan on touring the caves, at least on your first visit. The winery has more than 16,000 square feet of tunnels under the property, going as deep as about 30 feet below the surface.
The caves help keep the wine barrels at an even temperature of about 60 degrees year-round, which is a great environment for storing wine and a practical way to do it in Paso Robles. It is also a great way to get out of the hot sun during warmer months.
There is also a banquet space in the caves called the Wild Boar Room, which can be used for weddings, larger events, and winemaker dinners. It is a unique setting and adds a lot of character to the property.
A Fun Cave Tour Followed by a Relaxing Deck Tasting
We started with the cave tour, then did the complimentary tasting afterward. The tour did not take very long, but it was fun, informative, and absolutely worth doing. I would have loved to walk through the caves with a glass of wine in hand, but they do not allow glass in the caves, which makes sense.
After the tour, we went back to the deck for our tasting. We also ordered a charcuterie board, which was a nice addition and made the experience feel more relaxed.
The view from the deck is beautiful, and the setting is perfect for enjoying wine, snacks, and good company in the afternoon. It was not very busy when we visited, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
Friendly, Laid-Back, and Easy to Enjoy
The staff was very friendly, and the whole atmosphere felt laid back. Eberle is a well-known winery, but the experience did not feel overly formal or intimidating.
The deck is really the spot that made the visit for us. It is a beautiful place to sit, taste wine, and take in the Paso Robles scenery without feeling rushed.
Between the caves, the deck, the friendly service, and the complimentary tasting, Eberle felt like a very easy winery to recommend.
The Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon Were Our Favorites
We liked most of the wines we tried during the tasting, but the Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon were the clear standouts for us. We liked them enough that we bought more to take home.
That is always one of the best signs from a winery visit. If we are still interested in the wine after the tasting and want bottles for home, that says a lot more than just enjoying a few pours in the moment.
