Far Niente Winery Review
Far Niente is one of the most beautiful and polished winery experiences we have had in Napa Valley. The property, gardens, historic buildings, caves, classic car collection, and wines all feel special. It is definitely a premium visit, and the wines are priced accordingly, but the overall experience was one of the most memorable from our trip.

About Far Niente Winery
Far Niente was founded in 1885 in Oakville, California by John Benson. The name comes from the Italian phrase “dolce far niente,” which is often translated as “the sweetness of doing nothing” or living without a care.
Like many wineries, Far Niente was shut down during the Prohibition era. In 1979, Gil Nickel purchased the property and spent several years renovating and restoring the winery and grounds.
The estate has a historic feel that you notice as soon as you arrive. Between the architecture, gardens, caves, and overall presentation, Far Niente feels like a winery that has been carefully preserved and intentionally maintained.
A Beautiful Arrival, Even With a Reservation Mix-Up
When we arrived at Far Niente, the first thing we noticed was the property. The gardens, ponds, tall trees, and winery buildings are all beautiful. Before we even started the tasting, the setting already felt special.
We did have a mix-up with our reservation, which made the start of the visit a little awkward and later than we expected. That is the main reason I would not give the service category a perfect score from our visit.
Once everything was sorted out, though, the rest of the experience went very well. We were able to continue with the tour, see the property, and taste the wines.
Classic Cars, Cellars, Caves, and a Very Polished Setting
We started in the main area, where Far Niente displays its classic car collection. That was one of the unique parts of the visit and helped make the experience feel different from a standard tasting room.
From there, we toured different parts of the winery, including the cellars and caves. The caves added to the premium feel of the visit and gave us a better sense of the property beyond just the tasting room.
After the tour, we returned to the main building where the cars are located and began the tasting. The setting made the tasting feel more like a full experience than simply sitting down to try a few wines.
One of the Prettiest Winery Properties We Have Visited
Far Niente is one of the prettiest winery properties we have visited. The gardens and ponds surrounding the buildings are beautiful, and the tall trees give the estate a peaceful, almost tucked-away feeling.
Since the winery sits in the valley, the views are not as dramatic as some hillside wineries we visited. But the garden, architecture, caves, ponds, and classic car collection more than make up for that.
If you are someone who cares about the setting as much as the wine, Far Niente is very easy to appreciate.
The Wines Were Truly Spectacular
The wines were the best part of the visit. We did not try a wine we disliked, and several of them ranked near the top of everything we tasted during our Napa trip.
Far Niente is known for premium Napa wines, and that came through in the glass. The Cabernet Sauvignon in particular was the kind of big, bold Napa red that makes the experience feel special.
Count yourself lucky if you get to drink a glass of Far Niente, especially the flagship Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. It is not an everyday bottle for most people, but it is absolutely memorable.
Incredible Wines, But Definitely Premium Pricing
The biggest downside is price. The wines we were most interested in were expensive, and several bottles we encountered were in a price range that would make them special-occasion wines for us rather than regular purchases.
That is why we rated the prices lower than the wines, atmosphere, and overall experience. The quality is clearly there, but these are not budget-friendly bottles.
If your budget allows, I would highly recommend trying Far Niente. If you want something connected to the same family of brands at a lower price point, Post & Beam and Nickel & Nickel are worth looking into as well.

Also Consider Nickel & Nickel
We also did a tasting at Nickel & Nickel, and their wines were fantastic as well. If you want a premium Napa experience but are comparing options, Nickel & Nickel is absolutely worth considering.
Post & Beam is another related brand to keep in mind if you want something from the Far Niente family of wines at a more approachable price point.
Far Niente Wines
Far Niente focuses on a small core lineup rather than making a huge variety of wines. The main wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Dolce, the dessert wine. Different collections and vineyard options may be available depending on the tasting and current releases.
Cabernet Sauvignon
The flagship Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon was the standout wine style for us.
Chardonnay
Far Niente also produces Chardonnay, which gives visitors a white wine option within the tasting experience.
Dolce
Dolce is the dessert wine associated with Far Niente’s wine family.
Who Is Far Niente Best For?
Far Niente is best for visitors who want a premium Napa winery experience and are comfortable with premium wine pricing. This is not the place I would choose if your main goal is finding budget-friendly bottles, but it is a great choice if you want a beautiful property and high-end wines.
Good for Cabernet Lovers
The Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon was the wine that stood out most to us.
Good for Beautiful Winery Experiences
The gardens, ponds, architecture, caves, and classic cars make this a memorable place to visit.
Good for Special Occasions
The wines and setting both feel more like a special-occasion experience than a casual stop.

Far Niente Is a Beautiful Premium Napa Winery Experience
Far Niente earned 5 stars overall from us because the property is stunning, the tour is memorable, and the wines are truly excellent. The reservation mix-up and high bottle prices are worth noting, but the gardens, caves, classic cars, and Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon made this one of the most impressive winery visits from our Napa trip.

My winery reviews are based on places we have personally visited. I focus on the full experience, including the setting, tasting room, service, wines, prices, and whether I would recommend the winery to other everyday wine drinkers.
For Far Niente, the biggest takeaways were the beautiful gardens, historic winery, caves, classic car collection, premium Napa wines, high pricing, and the flagship Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon.
