Doce Robles Winery Review

Doce Robles was one of the most relaxed and unassuming winery visits from our Paso Robles trip. It is a small, blue-collar-feeling winery with friendly service, older wines available to taste, very fair pricing, and the kind of laid-back atmosphere that makes you feel comfortable right away.

Quick Review

Doce Robles Winery at a Glance

Best For

Visitors who want a relaxed, small-winery experience with good wine, fair prices, and no pretentious feeling.

What Stands Out

The owner/winemaker feel, older wines available to taste, case pricing, and relaxed Templeton Gap setting.

Favorite Wines

Our group especially liked the Sunset Red VII and the Merlot.

Would We Go Back?

Yes. We bought a case and would absolutely visit again.

Our Take

A Small Winery That Feels Personal and Welcoming

Our group of four visited Doce Robles in 2022, and the visit was fantastic. This is not the kind of winery that feels overly polished, corporate, or intimidating. It has more of a blue-collar, family-run feel, which made the tasting experience very comfortable.

The staff helped us learn about the wines, the history of the property, and the story behind the winery. We also got to meet Jimmy, the owner and winemaker, which made the visit feel even more personal.

That is one of the things I appreciate most about smaller wineries. You are not just tasting a lineup of wines. You are getting a sense of the people behind them, why they make wine the way they do, and what makes the property different.

Winery Background

About Doce Robles Winery

Doce Robles is a boutique winery just outside of Paso Robles. The 40-acre estate winery was founded in 1996 and grows Barbera, Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Primitivo, Petite Sirah, and Malbec.

Doce Robles translates to “twelve oaks” in Spanish, named after the 12 mature oak trees on the property. Jimmy and his wife Maribeth are the owners and winemakers, and their goal is to produce good-quality wines at affordable prices.

The winery produces roughly 4,000 to 6,000 cases annually. It was also the 37th winery established in the Paso Robles region, which is impressive considering there are now more than 300 wineries in the area.

Atmosphere

A Small Patio With a Beautiful Templeton Gap View

The facility itself is small and sits right next to Jimmy’s private home. It has a small outdoor patio with an excellent west-facing view toward the Templeton Gap.

I would not describe the setup as fancy. The patio furniture was older and not the most comfortable, which is why we rated the atmosphere lower than some of the other categories. But the property itself is pretty, quiet, and relaxing.

They also had three very friendly dogs, which added to the laid-back feeling of the visit. Overall, the atmosphere felt casual and welcoming, even if it was not the most polished tasting room setup from the trip.

Wine Tasting

Tasting Older Wines Was a Big Plus

One thing that stood out during our tasting was that we were able to try wines that were already 6 to 7 years old. That is not something you always get at a winery tasting.

Many wineries pour newer releases, which means you may need to take bottles home and wait years before they fully settle in. At Doce Robles, the wines we tasted already had age on them, and that is also what we purchased for our case.

I really liked that. It made the tasting feel more useful because we knew exactly what we were buying and did not have to guess how the wines might taste after a few years in the bottle.

Insider Tip

The Case Price Was an Amazing Value

If you purchase a case of wine, the price was only $10 per bottle during our visit. That is an amazing price for the quality of wine Doce Robles is producing, especially since the bottles we bought were already aged and ready to drink.

The shipping cost was quite high, so instead of having the wine mailed home, we ended up checking a case on our flight back. That worked better for us and helped preserve the value of the purchase.

For us, the case pricing was one of the biggest reasons this winery earned such a strong overall rating.

Tasting Highlights

Our Favorite Wines Were Sunset Red VII and Merlot

Our group’s two favorite wines were the Sunset Red VII and the Merlot. We liked the Sunset Red VII enough that we ended up ordering a case of it.

JIMMYMon White was also one of the more interesting wines from the tasting. It is a Viognier-Roussanne blend and was unlike anything we had tried before. That kind of unexpected wine is part of what makes visiting small wineries fun.

We also tried JIMMYMon Sweet, a late harvest Zinfandel, which added something different to the tasting lineup.
