Robert Mondavi Private Selection Heritage Red Blend Review
Robert Mondavi Private Selection Heritage Red Blend is a smooth, fruit-forward California red blend with strawberry, raspberry, vanilla, and chocolate notes. It is easy to drink, but it did not stand out enough for me to rate it as a bottle I would go out of my way to buy again.
Robert Mondavi Heritage Red Blend at a Glance
Our Score
81 Points
Best For
Casual weeknight dinners, barbecue, pasta, and easy red wine drinking.
Main Flavors
Raspberry, strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate.
Would I Buy It Again?
Probably not as a first choice, but I would drink it in a casual setting.
A Simple, Fruit-Forward Red Blend
Robert Mondavi Private Selection Heritage Red Blend came across as a simple, easy-drinking California red blend. The main aromas I noticed were strawberry and vanilla, which gave the wine a soft, approachable first impression.
On the palate, I picked up raspberry, strawberry, and some chocolate. The fruit is the main focus, with just enough sweetness and smoothness to make it easy to drink. This is not the kind of red blend I would describe as layered, complex, or especially memorable, but it is approachable.
For me, this is more of a casual red wine than a bottle I would save for a special dinner. It fits Robert Mondavi’s quote, “Drink what you like and like what you drink,” because this is really about easy enjoyment more than serious analysis.
What I Would Pair With Robert Mondavi Heritage Red Blend
I would keep the food pairings casual with this wine. Barbecue and pasta both make sense because the wine has enough fruit to work with sweet or smoky sauces and enough softness to avoid clashing with tomato-based dishes.
I would not overthink the pairing. This is the kind of red blend I would serve with burgers, barbecue chicken, pulled pork, pizza, baked pasta, spaghetti with meat sauce, or a simple weeknight meal.
Best pairings:
Barbecue chicken, pulled pork, burgers, pizza, pasta with red sauce, baked ziti, spaghetti and meatballs, casual charcuterie, and mild cheeses.
Who Is This Wine Best For?
I think this wine is best for someone who wants a smooth, easy red blend and is not looking for a lot of complexity. It is approachable, fruit-forward, and simple, which can be exactly what some people want for a casual dinner.
If you like red blends that lean into ripe red fruit, soft vanilla, and a little chocolate, you may enjoy this more than I did. If you usually prefer dry, structured reds with more tannin, earth, or depth, this may feel a little too simple.
I would not call it a bad wine. I would call it a basic, drinkable red blend that works better as a casual bottle than as something I would specifically recommend for people trying to discover a standout wine.
Notes From Robert Mondavi Private Selection
Robert Mondavi Private Selection was founded in 1994 by Robert Mondavi to highlight flavors from California’s coastal vineyards. The Heritage Red Blend follows that approachable California style, with fruit-forward flavors and a smooth profile designed for easy drinking.
The Robert Mondavi quote, “Drink what you like and like what you drink,” fits this bottle well. This is not a wine I would overanalyze. It is better judged as a casual, accessible red blend.

This was just eh. Didn’t break the bank, but there are other entry level wines out there that we enjoy much better than this one. Mondavi is a huge brand and makes a lot of great wines, but this just wasn’t one of them. I doubt we would buy this again. You may find this being served at a wedding, and it’s decent enough to drink at the wedding. But we wouldn’t go out of our way to purchase this for drinking at home.
