Wine Squirrel Wine Preserving Decanter Review

The Wine Squirrel Wine Preserving Decanter is a simple wine accessory that helps preserve opened bottles of red or white wine. We tested it at home, and it worked very well for keeping wine fresh longer than normal. The biggest downside from our experience is that the glass is delicate, and ours eventually shattered after being taken out of the packaging.

Quick Review

Wine Squirrel at a Glance

Best For

Wine drinkers who open bottles over several days and want an easy way to preserve leftover wine.

What Stands Out

It preserved our wine for 12 days, and the wine still tasted great.

Biggest Downside

The glass is delicate. Ours shattered on the countertop after being taken out of the packaging.

Would We Use It Again?

Yes, but we would be much more careful handling and storing it.

Our Take

A Simple Wine Preserver That Actually Worked for Us

The Wine Squirrel Wine Preserving Decanter is designed to help opened wine last longer by reducing the amount of air touching the wine. Instead of trying to preserve wine inside the original bottle, you pour the wine into the decanter and use the plunger-style seal to close off the wine from excess oxygen.

Overall, we thought it worked great. It was easy to use, easy to clean, and had a nice design that looked good on the counter. More importantly, it actually helped preserve the wine during our at-home test.

We tested the wine after 12 days, and it still tasted great. That is the part that matters most. A wine accessory can look nice, but if it does not actually preserve the wine, it is not very useful. In our case, the Wine Squirrel did what it was supposed to do.

How It Works

How to Use the Wine Squirrel Decanter

The setup is very simple. You pour the wine into the decanter, place the plunger and seal on top of the wine, and turn it clockwise to lock everything into place.

That seal helps limit the wine’s exposure to air, which should help it last longer than it would in a half-empty bottle. It is a very straightforward system, which is one of the things we liked about it.

After sealing the wine, I would store it in the refrigerator to help it stay fresh longer. That includes red wine. Just remember to take red wine out of the fridge ahead of time so it can warm back up closer to serving temperature before you drink it.

At-Home Test

Our Wine Was Still Good After 12 Days

The most important test for us was whether the Wine Squirrel could actually help preserve wine. We stored wine in the decanter and checked it after 12 days.

The result was better than we expected. The wine still tasted great, which made us feel like the product was doing its job. For people who do not finish a bottle in one night, that is a real benefit.

I would still recommend using common sense. Store the wine in the refrigerator, keep the seal properly in place, and do not expect every wine to age the same once opened. But from our test, the preservation worked very well.

Design & Cleaning

Nice Design and Easy to Clean

We liked the look and design of the Wine Squirrel. It feels more like a real decanter than a gadget, which makes it nicer to use and leave out while serving wine.

It also seemed to be made from quality materials, and cleaning it after use was pretty easy. That matters because wine accessories that are annoying to clean often end up sitting in a cabinet unused.

From a day-to-day use standpoint, this was one of the easier preservation products we have tried.

Important Warning

Be Careful Handling the Glass

The biggest downside from our experience is that the decanter is made of delicate glass. After the first time we used it, we stored it back in the package. When we took it out again, it fell over and the glass shattered on the countertop.

That was frustrating because the product had worked well for preserving wine. If you buy one, I would be extra careful taking it out of the packaging, storing it, and handling it around hard countertops.

If you drink wine over several days, this gives you a better way to preserve leftovers.

If you are worried about delicate glass or hard countertops, handle it very carefully.

The major downside is that the glass is delicate, and ours shattered after falling over on the countertop. I would still consider it a useful wine accessory, but I would handle and store it very carefully.
