Napa Valley Winery Review

Gandona Winery Review

Gandona was one of the most beautiful and personal winery visits from our Napa trip. The drive up Pritchard Hill takes some planning, but once you arrive, the view over Lake Hennessey and Napa Valley makes the trip completely worth it. The tasting felt private, thoughtful, and premium from start to finish.

Quick Review

Best For

Napa visitors looking for a small, premium, appointment-style winery with incredible views and high-end wines.

What Stands Out

The Pritchard Hill setting, Lake Hennessey views, personal service, small production, and excellent Cabernet.

Favorite Wine

Encosta Cabernet Sauvignon was our favorite from the tasting.

Would We Go Back?

Yes. It is expensive, but the wines, views, and experience made it memorable.

Winery Background

About Gandona Winery

Gandona has family roots tied to the Douro region of Portugal, and the winery was started in Napa Valley in 2006. The estate is located on Pritchard Hill, overlooking Lake Hennessey and Napa Valley.

The winery name comes from the family’s grandfather, Gandona, which translates to “humble man” in Portuguese. That story gives the estate a personal feel before you even get into the wines.

Based on the information we had during our visit, Gandona grows the grapes used in its wines and leans into traditional, old-world European methods. The tasting experience also matched that small, careful, premium feel.

Before You Go

Give Yourself Extra Time to Drive Up the Hill

If you are planning a visit to Gandona, give yourself extra time. It can take a while to drive up the hill to the winery, and you do not want to be late for your reservation.

I would also plan to arrive with a few minutes to spare so you can take in the view before the tasting starts. The setting is a major part of the experience, and it is worth slowing down for.

Our Visit

Kelly Had a Fantastic Tasting Ready for Us

Kelly met us right away when we arrived and had a fantastic tasting experience ready for our group of four. That personal welcome set the tone for the rest of the visit.

Right away, the view was almost distracting. The building where we did the tasting was beautiful, but it was hard not to keep looking out over Lake Hennessey and Napa Valley. It was cloudy when we visited, and even then, the view was incredible.

Thankfully, the wine lived up to the setting. Everything about the visit felt top notch, and this is absolutely a winery we would visit again.

Atmosphere

One of the Best Views From Our Napa Trip

The view is the first thing I think about when remembering Gandona. Even with cloudy weather, the setting felt special. On a clear day, I imagine it would be even more impressive.

The winery building itself was also beautiful, but the location is what makes the experience feel elevated. It is not a quick, casual tasting room stop. It feels more private and intentional.

If you care about atmosphere and scenery, Gandona is one of those places where the setting becomes part of the wine experience.

Wine Quality & Price

Excellent Wines, But Definitely Special-Occasion Pricing

The wines were excellent and matched the premium feel of the visit. We were able to taste everything offered during our visit, and the overall quality was very high.

The downside is price. These wines are expensive and feel more geared toward collectors, serious Napa Cabernet drinkers, or special occasions rather than everyday drinking.

I do think the quality matches the pricing, but that does not mean the wines fit into our normal budget. I just wish we could afford to drink them more often.

Tasting Highlights

Encosta Cabernet and the Port Were the Standouts

Gandona is a small producer with a limited wine lineup, and that made the tasting feel focused. During our visit, we were able to try everything they offered.

Our favorite wine was the Encosta Cabernet Sauvignon. It stood out the most from the tasting and was the bottle I would remember first from the visit.

We are also big port fans, so Gandona Estate “Fraga do Arco” was a fun highlight for us as well. Their port-style wine was fantastic and added something different to the tasting.

Insider Tips

Two Things to Know Before Visiting Gandona

There Is an Estate Cat

A very friendly cat lives at the estate. Nobody in our group was allergic, so we did not mind at all. But if you have cat allergies, it is worth asking about before your visit.

Pack Lunch for Lake Hennessey

The winery is located above the lake’s boat launch, where there are picnic tables. We packed lunch and ate there, which worked perfectly for our day.

Wines Offered

Gandona Wines Offered During Our Visit

Gandona is a small producer, so the selection was limited compared with larger wineries. Offerings can change over time, and estate or library selections may be available in very limited quantities.

Gandona Chardonnay

One of the few white wines listed from our visit.

Gandona Cabernet Sauvignon

A premium Napa Cabernet from the estate lineup.

Encosta Cabernet Sauvignon

Our favorite wine from the tasting.

Gandona Estate “Fraga do Arco”

A port-style wine that we really enjoyed as port fans.

Meia

A wine that changes from year to year depending on the grapes used.

Real Winery Reviews From Our Own Visits

My winery reviews are based on places we have personally visited. I focus on the full experience, including the setting, tasting room, service, wines, prices, and whether I would recommend the winery to other everyday wine drinkers.

For Gandona, the biggest takeaways were the Pritchard Hill setting, Lake Hennessey views, Kelly’s service, premium wine quality, Encosta Cabernet Sauvignon, the port-style wine, and the high but understandable pricing.
