Summerset Winery Review
Summerset Winery is one of the most established winery experiences near Des Moines, Iowa. Between the vineyard setting, large barn-style winery, patios, event space, and history as one of Iowa’s early estate wineries, this feels like more than a quick tasting room stop.

A Scenic, Established Iowa Winery Close to Des Moines
Summerset Winery stood out to us because it feels like one of the more complete winery destinations in the Des Moines area. Some wineries are mostly about the tasting room. Summerset feels more like a place where people come for the setting, the events, the outdoor space, and the full winery experience.
Ron and Linda Mark opened Summerset Winery in 1997 after beginning to grow grapes on Summerset ridge above the Middle River in 1989. I like that part of the story because it shows this winery was not created overnight. There was real experimentation behind it, including figuring out which grape varieties could handle cold Iowa winters and still thrive in central Iowa.
That history matters when reviewing a winery like this. Summerset is not just a local tasting room that opened because wine became trendy. It has roots in Iowa wine going back decades, and that gives the visit more context.

Summerset Feels Like a True Winery Destination
What we liked most about Summerset Winery is that it feels like a destination, not just a counter where you taste a few wines and leave. The driveway winds through the vineyard and leads to the winery and tasting room, which gives the visit a more complete sense of arrival.
The winery sits on 12 acres of vineyard just south of Des Moines, and the setting is a big part of the appeal. Between the landscaping, decks, terraces, event spaces, and outdoor areas, this is the kind of winery that makes sense for people who want to stay awhile rather than rush through a tasting.
I also think Summerset does a nice job of feeling connected to central Iowa. It is close enough to Des Moines to be convenient, but the vineyard setting makes it feel like you have stepped away from the city for a bit.
One of Iowa’s Early Estate Wineries
Ron and Linda Mark opened Summerset Winery in the summer of 1997, making it one of Iowa’s early estate wineries. They had already started growing grapes on the Summerset ridge above the Middle River in 1989, which gives the winery a much deeper history than many casual visitors may realize.
Ron experimented with several grape varieties to see what could survive Iowa winters and grow well in central Iowa. The first yield was processed in 1993, and the idea of Iowa wine started becoming real.
I appreciate that background because Iowa wine has to deal with challenges that warmer wine regions do not. A winery like Summerset helps show how much trial and adaptation goes into making wine in a colder climate.
A Barn-Style Winery With Patios, Events, and Vineyard Views
Summerset originally opened to the public through the owners’ home, with the basement redesigned into a tasting room and wine production happening in a modified garage. As the winery grew, they eventually moved into a larger barn-style facility designed for the cellar, tasting room, event hall, meeting room, gift shop, and banquet space.
That larger setting is a big part of what makes Summerset different from a smaller tasting room. It has the kind of space that works for group tours, special events, weddings, receptions, live music, and outdoor afternoons with wine.
During warmer months, the lawn, umbrellas, patios, and outdoor concert setting sound like a major part of the winery’s personality. If you are someone who likes the atmosphere of a winery just as much as the tasting itself, Summerset is the type of place that makes sense.

Visiting Summerset Winery
Summerset Winery is located at 15101 Fairfax Street in Indianola, Iowa, just south of Des Moines. Based on the information we had, winter tasting room hours were Wednesday through Saturday from 12pm to 5pm, Sunday from 12pm to 5pm, Monday closed, and Tuesday by appointment only.
The winery also listed holiday closures for July 4th, Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day, with adjusted holiday hours for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
