La Vida Loca Winery Review

La Vida Loca Winery is a small, family-rooted winery near Indianola, Iowa with a very different feel from a traditional grape-only winery. This is the kind of place to visit if you enjoy fruit wines, sweet wines, unusual flavors, and a relaxed local tasting room experience.

Our Take

A Casual Iowa Winery With a Lot of Personality

La Vida Loca Winery feels like the kind of winery that grew out of a genuine hobby and family passion, not a corporate wine project. The story starts with the Putz family moving to rural Warren County in 1987, where berries were growing on the property. What started with picking berries and making homemade jellies eventually turned into Tony making wine as a casual hobby.

After a neighbor and relative, Ron, tasted the wine and became more involved with picking fruit and producing wine, the idea kept growing. As more people discovered the different flavors they were making, La Vida Loca Winery came to life.

That backstory fits the winery well. This is not a place I would describe as formal, polished, or trying to copy a California tasting room. It is more of a friendly, local, boutique winery with a strong focus on unique fruit wines and approachable tasting experiences.

Quick Review

La Vida Loca Winery at a Glance

Best For

People who enjoy sweet wines, fruit wines, unusual flavors, and casual local wineries.

What Stands Out

The large variety of fruit wines and the family-style origin story behind the winery.

Our Visit Style

A laid-back tasting experience focused on trying different and unexpected wine flavors.

Would We Recommend It?

Yes, especially if you like sweeter wines or want a local winery experience that feels different.

What We Liked

The Wine List Is Definitely Not Boring

The thing that stands out most about La Vida Loca Winery is the variety. This is not a tasting room where every wine feels like a slight variation of the same grape. The list includes sweet wines, semi-sweet wines, dry wines, fruit wines, and even cooking wines with flavors like basil-raisin, garlic-raisin, jalapeño-raisin, onion-raisin, and rosemary-raisin.

That kind of lineup makes the tasting experience more fun if you go in with the right expectations. If you only want classic Cabernet, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Old World-style wines, this probably is not going to be your ideal stop. But if you enjoy trying unusual wines and seeing what a small local winery can create, La Vida Loca has a lot to explore.

I especially like that the winery seems comfortable being itself. It leans into fruit, variety, and approachability instead of pretending to be a traditional fine wine estate.

Wine Style

The sweet list includes wines like American Wild, Aronia-Sweet, Currant, Raspberry, Rhubarb, Sweet Cynsation, and more.

Semi-Sweet Wines

The semi-sweet list includes Apple, Blackberry, Cherry, Edelweiss, Elderberry, Honey-Blackberry, Prima Rosa, Sweet Corn Cob, and others.

The dry wine list includes American Cynthiana, Aronia Red, La Vida Loca Red, La Vida Loca White, Main Squeeze, and Viva la Vignoles.

Cooking Wines

The cooking wines are one of the more unusual parts of the list, with flavors like basil-raisin, cilantro-raisin, garlic-raisin, jalapeño-raisin, onion-raisin, and rosemary-raisin.

Visiting La Vida Loca Winery

A Boutique Winery Near Indianola, Iowa

La Vida Loca Winery is located at 7852 Jesup Street in Indianola, Iowa. Based on the information we had, visitors could purchase wine by the bottle, enjoy a glass on the deck overlooking the pond, or sample wines for $1 per sample.

As with any small winery, I would check current hours, tasting options, and pricing before making a special trip. Winery hours and tasting policies can change, especially for smaller boutique wineries.

Our Honest Opinion

This Is Not the Winery for Everyone, and That Is Okay

La Vida Loca Winery is probably not the best fit for someone who only wants dry, traditional, grape-focused wines. If your ideal tasting is Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, this may not be the type of winery you are looking for.

But if you enjoy fruit wines, sweet wines, unusual flavors, and wineries that feel more local and personal, that is where La Vida Loca becomes much more interesting.

I think the best way to approach a place like this is with curiosity. Do not compare it directly to a Napa tasting room. Go in expecting a small Iowa winery with a lot of personality, and you will have a much better experience.
